The Carrillo Street Gymnasium, a designated City Landmark, was designed in 1926 by architect Julia Morgan, who famously designed Hearst Castle among more than 700 buildings in California throughout her career. The Carrillo Street Gym Exterior Renovation Project will repair and restore the building’s exterior to honor the original design of Julia Morgan while addressing water intrusion that impacts gym use during wetter months.
The exterior renovation includes waterproofing, repairing the stucco and decorative columns, replacing damaged windows, painting, and finalizing the seismic evaluation report. Upon completion, the Carrillo Street Gym will return to being a reliable gymnasium for year-round indoor recreational use.
The renovation is expected to last from Fall 2024 through Spring 2025. During the project, access to the building, its parking lot, and the breezeway between the gym and the Carrillo Recreation Center will be closed. Programming at the Carrillo Recreation Center will not be impacted.
