Construction continues at Dwight Murphy Field to transform the 100-year-old park into a modern, inclusive space for all. As of June 2026, the Dwight Murphy Field Renovation Project is 50% complete.

Since construction began in June 2025, crews have completed site grading and installation of critical underground infrastructure, including the sewer system, storm drains, and electrical conduit for park lighting.

Work currently underway includes:

  • Construction, hand sculpting, and painting of custom playground features, including the multi-story Magical Treehouse
  • Construction of the restroom building
  • Construction of the curb and gutter system on Ninos Drive and Por La Mar
  • Construction of an accessible ramp from Por La Mar

The project remains on schedule, and the park is expected to reopen in late spring of 2027.

About the Dwight Murphy Field Renovation Project

The renovated park will feature Santa Barbara’s first all-abilities playground, Gwendolyn’s Playground, which will include a multi-story treehouse, hill slides, inclusive swings, musical play elements, and a calming pod. A new multi-sport field, sized to accommodate youth and adult soccer, rugby, and lacrosse, will feature designated areas for players and spectators along the sidelines, as well as improved sports lighting. Additional park improvements include an expanded outdoor fitness area, a large turf area for drop-in activities and picnics, a shaded group picnic area, new restrooms, new walking paths with lighting, and increased parking.
